Top 10 Most Spoken Languages

1. Mandarin

Surprise! English is not the most spoken language and loses to China by a large number. With nearly a billion speakers, Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world. One of the hardest languages to speak, it is the official and most widely spoken in China.
German, Japanese and Persian are also among some of the most widely spoken languages in the world.



2. English

The official language of 54 countries, this language is spoken by 750 million people. It is an amalgamation of various dialects and was first spoken in England. By the end of the 19th century, English had become the most dominant global language officially used for all international affairs.

3. Spanish

Español, the language which originated in the Castile región of Spain is spoken by a 500 million people which includes many students studying foreign languages. The official language in 22 countries and widely-spoken in South America, many English words are borrowed from this language.

4. Hindi

Hindi or the Hindustani language, which is the mother tongue to most of the crowded population of India, is spoken by 497 million people.

5. Russian

The largest native language of Europe and one of the six official languages of the UN, it is a Slavic language spoken primarily in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan with about 280 million native speakers.

6. Arabic

One of the oldest languages, which has lent many words to many Islamic languages is the language found in Quran. Read from left to write, this language is spoken by over 250 million people largely from the Middle East.

7. Portuguese

The early Portugal explorers like Vasco da Gama have the credit of the expansion of the language throughout the world. Spoken by a total of 240 million people, this “sweet and gracious language” is the national language of the Brazilians

8. Bengali

Being the official language of Bangladesh and spoken in a couple of states in India, the number of Bengali speakers in the world is quite high at about 205 million. The language has a rich literary tradition.

9. French

«La Langue française», which is spoken by millions from tons of countries around the world like France, Belgium, Canada, Rwanda, Haiti and tons of other communities, is one of the most romantic languages that exist.

10. Malay/ Indonesian

Malay is the national language of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei and one of the four official languages of Singapore. This language is spoken by more than 215 million people.
